A Source of Stability Amidst a Torrent
of Change
Our industry is on the bow wave of some of the greatest change in the last 50 years. Tens of thousands of new pilots and maintenance professionals are entering the workforce each year; NextGen Airspace is coming online; automation continues to evolve at an ever-increasing pace; and, oh yeah, after this holiday season, nearly 700,000 new UAS (drones) will be in the hands of hobbyists. Challenging times, indeed. What is needed to navigate this whitewater is a source of stability upon which we can anchor. Something that can preserve our safety, culture and values during this great sea change.... Read More

Data Comm Remains on Track for Expansion Next Year
The FAA remains on track to deliver its new Data Communications (Data Comm) system to more than 50 ATC towers and TRACONS next year, followed by the en route centers in 2019. Data Comm, which transitions pilot/controller communications from the current analog voice system to primarily digital text, is considered a key part of the FAA's NextGen efforts. Data Comm promises to ease congestion on frequencies and also reduce the potential for misunderstanding critical safety information.... Read More

Eye-Opening Information About Sleep
A hot topic in business aviation is how to balance a day of flying with the need for much-needed rest. Mayo Clinic aerospace medicine team physician, Dr. Steven Altchuler, has recommendations to help flight crews adjust to work hours that often extend beyond 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: "Ideally you want to set your watch, and you want your body to live on that watch time wherever the sun happens to be at any point in time." ... NBAA, AOPA Join UAS Registration Task Force
NBAA and AOPA are joining a new task force charged with devising a proposed registration system for private and recreational unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx detailed plans this month for a UAS national registry and announced the creation of the UAS Registration Task Force Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC). The task force will recommend a proposed framework for the registry by November 20 to provide the FAA time to establish it in advance of the holiday season.... Read More

Ready for Performance-Based Navigation?
An example of how technology has revolutionized aviation is the satellite-based air navigation that offers significant opportunity for quicker aircraft operations and improved fuel consumption. But what is Performance Based Navigation (PBN), and how does it work? PBN focuses on precise operations within a particular airspace, rather than the location of traditional navigational devices such as VORs, NDB and Instrument Landing Systems.... Read More
