Medical Advisory: Just How Important Are Travel Immunizations?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), progress towards the global vaccination target for 2015 is far off track and they are calling for renewed efforts to get progress back on course. Travelers are susceptible to contracting unpleasant but vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles, typhoid or hepatitis A. For example, a single case of measles on a flight can quickly become a major problem. Suddenly, a successful business trip turns into a medical illness that could easily have been avoided.... Insurers Reward Loss-of-Control Recovery Training
FlightSafety International recently observed that in-flight loss of control (LOC-I) has overtaken controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) as the leading cause of aviation fatalities. Aviation insurers recognize the advantage of encouraging safety training that can avert large claims, and some underwriters and providers of in-flight upset recognition and recovery training (URRT) are collaborating to mitigate instruction costs. Global Aerospace recently announced its 2015 Loss of Control In-Flight (LOC-I) training program provided by SM4 program partner Calspan Corporation.... Read More

Preventing Crew Fatigue from A to Zzz
“As long as humans are pilots, fatigue will be a critical safety issue that demands our attention,” says NTSB member and human fatigue expert Mark Rosekind, Ph.D. “The human body is not designed to work around the clock and has a vital requirement for sleep. Fatigue degrades every aspect of human performance, including reaction time, memory, judgment and the ability to communicate.” There’s a long history of crew fatigue as a factor in fatal accidents. All too often, flight crews don’t recognize the risks posed by long flights, extended duty days and sleep loss.... Read More

U.S. Safety Agency Urges Pilots To Avoid Distracted Flying
After four recent small-plane collisions that caused eight deaths, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued an official “safety alert” advising pilots to maintain fundamental "see and avoid" vigilance by scanning for traffic throughout a flight, using lights and clearly communicating their intentions.... When is a Crewmember Fit for Duty?
Determining a pilot’s fitness for duty can pose a challenge for business aviation operators, and a lack of any FAA guidance on the issue compounds the problem, said Dr. Quay Snyder at the Flight Safety Foundation Business Aviation Safety Summit last month. Last year, the NTSB listed fitness for duty related to the use of prescription drugs and over-the-counter remedies as one of its top 10 concerns following a 22-year study. The use of impairing drugs by pilots involved in fatal accidents rose to 23 percent from 11 percent.... Read More
